Here's the thing about Pablo Gold Grape Ice: it tastes like the purple slush from the machine by the newsagent's till, and then it reminds you it is a Pablo. It comes from the Gold Edition, the 17mg line and the middle of the brand's five, and it is the Gold can that takes a sweet dark grape and puts a fresh mint twinge behind it. Grape first, mint a step behind
Pop one in and the grape is straight out, the sweet purple kind rather than the green one, like the grape flavoured ice pole from the bottom of the freezer. It is bold and sugary up front, with a touch of tartness that keeps it lively. Then the Ice part arrives, a light fresh mint lift behind the fruit that cools it without taking over. The grape stays on top for the whole load, the mint stays underneath, and the finish is sweet and fresh at the same time. Sweet shop at the front, Pablo at the back. Fair play to it.
