Here's the thing about White Fox Peppered Mint: it is the one mint on the shelf that bites back, and this 4mg can is the gentlest way in. The lid is bright green with a small flame beside the fox, which is fair warning. The brand is made in Sweden by Swedish Smokeless, the company once called GN Tobacco, and every pouch is tobacco free. The maker says the flavour comes from essential oils, and that Peppered Mint took months of trying different fragrant oils before it was right. On our shelf it opens the Mild line.

Peppermint is the first thing you get, clean and cool, and the black pepper follows a moment after, a dry warmth at the back of the mouth. It is the same trick as mint sauce with a crack of pepper in it on a Sunday roast: the cool and the warm sat together and both tasting better for it. The pepper stays polite at this strength, a tingle rather than a flame, and the mint keeps the whole thing fresh right to the end. The finish is clean with a last whisper of spice. Fair play to it.
